Things tend to slow down during summer months, but even on hot days, coffee drinkers still enjoy their daily cup(s) of coffee. Cups of coffee and online ads don't really rise and fall with temperatures and seasons - they are evergreens, and their "consumption" simply continues to grow year over year. That's one of the reasons I wrote a blog post explaining how coffee beans, online ads, and mortgage leads are all related. My argument is that DoublePositive is essentially an ad network, but does to online ads what Starbucks does to coffee beans.
In the last edition of PositiveWire, I paid a lot of attention to the flurry of acquisitions in the online advertising space. There has been a much smaller acquisition recently announced: Google acquired GrandCentral for $50 Million. GrandCentral provides consumers a free phone number that can be redirected to any other phone or voice mail. Because of the relatively small deal size, not much attention was paid to this acquisition, but it was big news at DoublePositive. GrandCentral has virtually nothing to do with Internet traffic (aside from a web-based control panel), thus it signaled Google's interest and entrance into LIVE VOICE traffic. Google has become the king at monetizing Internet traffic. Google's entrance into the LIVE voice traffic space is a significant validation of the premise that DoublePositive is built upon. The ultimate value of Internet traffic is limited by the zeroes and ones that make it up, but there is significantly more value to a LIVE consumer than a snapshot of a consumer represented by zeroes and ones (whether it be in the form of a click or a lead).
This is just one more step in the evolution of online performance-based marketing, and the past is merely prologue.
